NUTN Center for Gender Empowerment and Sexual Assault Prevention Unveils Its New Office
To advance the spirit of gender equity education and improve the prevention of campus gender-related incidents, National University of Tainan — commissioned by the K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education — established the Center for Gender Empowerment and Sexual Assault Prevention, directed by Assistant Professor Lu Ming-chen of the Department of Education. The Center held the unveiling ceremony for its new office on February 22. Located beside Shulin Street on the NUTN campus, the warm and welcoming space is intended to support a better future for gender equity education.
The ceremony deliberately began at 11:42 a.m., marking the moment 20 years earlier when student Yeh Yung-chih raised his hand to ask his teacher whether he could go to the restroom before the end of class — carrying forward public attention to and advocacy for gender equity education. Roses were used as decoration in memory of the "rose boy," and all staff wore shirts printed with rainbow-colored gender equity slogans. Guests including Senior Specialist Chan Ya-hui of the K-12 Education Administration, NUTN Vice President Chen Hui-ping, Principal Cheng Wen-yi of Tainan Girls' Senior High School, Principal Chen Yun-ju of Chia-Chi Senior High School, and Secretary Liu Hsiu-feng of National Hemei Experimental School attended and spoke, expressing high expectations and best wishes for the Center.
The Center works to help schools put gender equity education into practice, primarily through the Gender Empowerment and Incident Prevention Program for Special Education Schools. Working with all 14 special education schools nationwide and centering the needs of their students, it reviews each school's background and particular circumstances, integrates gender equity education into school-based curricula, teaching and policy, and helps each school build its own school-based response plan. The Center also handles editorial work for issues 91 through 98 of the Ministry of Education's Gender Equity Education Quarterly, exploring key gender issues and offering a platform for educators to exchange knowledge and teaching experience.
The Center will strengthen exchange and cooperation with all parties to promote gender equity education more effectively, building teachers' capacity and a friendlier campus for children, while using public events to share the concepts and everyday practice of gender equity.
